September 15th (2014) Program by Our NCCWSL Delegation

AAUW San Juan had the priviledge to send three young Puerto Rican women to NCCWSL (the National Conference of Collegiate Women Student Leaders) in June 2014.  This was a brand new initiative of the branch – focusing our energies on doing positive things for women and girls right here on the Island, as well as supporting National fellowships and grant with the funds we raised.

The branch members designed an application, solicited candidates, did interviews and finally chose one undergrad, Sofia Delgado, and Master’s candidate, Mayra Sanchez, and PhD candidate Noraida Martínez to represent us and Puerto Rico at the national conference.  Our three delegates were part of a 900 plus throng of young women fired up to change the world!

On Monday, September 15th, at our first meeting of the 2014-2015 program year, Sofia, Mayra and Noraida described their experiences for us – giving us details on the themes of the plenary speakers, the Women of Distinction Ceremony and the workshops they all attended.

Each and every one of us would have loved a similar opportunity!  Vicariously we lived the four days they spent in College Park, Maryland and Washington DC.  Later, I hope to add to this space, more of their presentation in their words, but for the moment, here are some pictures.

The AAUW San Juan Branch is committed to send at least one Puerto Rican college woman every year to attend the conference.  Should you wish to donate to this cause, please write a check to AAUW San Juan for any amount.  Put in the memo field that the donation is for NCCSWL.  Checks should be mailed to Nayda Cumpiano, Treasurer at AAUW San Juan, PO Box 9147, San Juan PR 00908-9147.

If you are a college student and would like to apply to attend the next NCCWSL – please send an email with your contact information to aauwpr@gmail.com .  The application can be found here and a description of the programDSC_9594 DSC_9605 DSC_9607 DSC_9614a DSC_9616a DSC_9619 DSC_9620a DSC_9621a girls and the process here.
